והוה מבתר כן ועבד ליה אבשלום רתיכין וסוסון וחמשין גברא רדפין קדמוהי:
qdmwhy rdpyn gbra wkhmshyn wswswn rthykyn abshlwm lyh webd kn mbthr whwh
After this, Absalom prepared a chariot and horses for himself, and fifty men to run before him.

ומקדים אבשלום וקאים על כיבש אורח תרעא והוי כל גברא דיהי ליה דין למיעל לקדם מלכא למידן וקרי אבשלום ליה ואמר אי מדא קרתא את ואמר מחד שבטיא דישראל עבדך:
ebdk dyshral shbTya mkhd wamr ath qrtha mda ay wamr lyh abshlwm wqry lmydn mlka lqdm lmyel dyn lyh dyhy gbra kl whwy threa awrkh kybsh el wqaym abshlwm wmqdym
Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate. When any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, “What city are you from?” He said, “Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.”

ואמר ליה אבשלום חזי פתגמך תקנין ויאן ושמע לית לך מן קדם מלכא:
mlka qdm mn lk lyth wshme wyan thqnyn pthgmk khzy abshlwm lyh wamr
Absalom said to him, “Behold, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputized by the king to hear you.”

ואמר אבשלום מן ימנני דינא בארעא וקדמי ייתי כל גבר דיהי ליה דין ומצו ואדינניה בקשוט:
bqshwT wadynnyh wmtsw dyn lyh dyhy gbr kl yythy wqdmy barea dyna ymnny mn abshlwm wamr
Absalom said moreover, “Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!”

והוה כד קרב גברא למסגד ליה ומושיט ית ידיה ומתקיף ביה ונשיק ליה:
lyh wnshyq byh wmthqyp ydyh yth wmwshyT lyh lmsgd gbra qrb kd whwh
It was so, that when any man came near to bow down to him, he stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and kissed him.

ועבד אבשלום כפתגמא הדין לכל ישראל דאתן למידן לות מלכא וגנב אבשלום ית לבא דאנשי ישראל:
yshral danshy lba yth abshlwm wgnb mlka lwth lmydn dathn yshral lkl hdyn kpthgma abshlwm webd
Absalom did this sort of thing to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

והוה מסוף ארבעין שנין ואמר אבשלום למלכא אזיל כען ואשלם ית נדרי דנדרית קדם יי בחברון:
bkhbrwn yy qdm dndryth ndry yth washlm ken azyl lmlka abshlwm wamr shnyn arbeyn mswp whwh
At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Yahweh, in Hebron.

ארי נדרא נדר עבדך במיתבי בגשור בארם למימר אם אתבא יתיבינני יי לירושלם ואפלח קדם יי:
yy qdm waplkh lyrwshlm yy ythybynny athba am lmymr barm bgshwr bmythby ebdk ndr ndra ary
For your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If Yahweh shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Yahweh.’”

ואמר ליה מלכא אזיל בשלם וקם ואזל לחברון:
lkhbrwn wazl wqm bshlm azyl mlka lyh wamr
The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.

ושלח אבשלום מאללין בכל שבטיא דישראל למימר כמשמעכון ית קל שופרא ותימרון מלך אבשלום בחברון:
bkhbrwn abshlwm mlk wthymrwn shwpra ql yth kmshmekwn lmymr dyshral shbTya bkl mallyn abshlwm wshlkh
But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron!’”

ועם אבשלום אזלו מאתן גברין מירושלם זמינין ואזלין לתומיהון ולא ידעין כל מדעם:
mdem kl ydeyn wla lthwmyhwn wazlyn zmynyn myrwshlm gbryn mathn azlw abshlwm wem
Two hundred men went with Absalom out of Jerusalem, who were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they didn’t know anything.

ושלח אבשלום ית אחיתופל גילונאה מליכא דדוד מקרתיה מגלה בדבחותיה ית דבחיא והוה מרדא תקיף ועמא אזיל וסגי עם אבשלום:
abshlwm em wsgy azyl wema thqyp mrda whwh dbkhya yth bdbkhwthyh mglh mqrthyh ddwd mlyka gylwnah akhythwpl yth abshlwm wshlkh
Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. The conspiracy was strong, for the people increased continually with Absalom.

ואתא דמחוי לות דוד למימר אתפני לבא דאנש ישראל בתר אבשלום:
abshlwm bthr yshral dansh lba athpny lmymr dwd lwth dmkhwy watha
A messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.”

ואמר דוד לכל עבדוהי די עמיה בירושלם קומו ונערוק ארי לא תהי לנא שיזבא מן קדם אבשלום אוחו למיזל דילמא יוחי וידבקיננא ויכמון ית בישתא עלנא וימחי ית קרתא לפתגם דחרב:
dkhrb lpthgm qrtha yth wymkhy elna byshtha yth wykmwn wydbqynna ywkhy dylma lmyzl awkhw abshlwm qdm mn shyzba lna thhy la ary wnerwq qwmw byrwshlm emyh dy ebdwhy lkl dwd wamr
David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise! Let’s flee, or else none of us will escape from Absalom. Hurry to depart, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

ואמרו עבדי מלכא למלכא ככל דיימר רבוני מלכא הא עבדיך:
ebdyk ha mlka rbwny dyymr kkl lmlka mlka ebdy wamrw
The king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.”
16
ונפק מלכא וכל אנש ביתיה די עמיה ושבק מלכא ית עשר נשין לחינן למטר ביתא:
bytha lmTr lkhynn nshyn eshr yth mlka wshbq emyh dy bythyh ansh wkl mlka wnpq
The king went out, and all his household after him. The king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house.

ונפק מלכא וכל אנש ביתיה עמיה וקמו באתר דרחיק:
drkhyq bathr wqmw emyh bythyh ansh wkl mlka wnpq
The king went out, and all the people after him; and they stayed in Beth Merhak.
18
וכל עבדוהי עברין על ידוהי וכל קשתיא וכל קלעיא וכל גתאי שית מאה גברא דאתן עמיה מגת עברין קדם מלכא:
mlka qdm ebryn mgth emyh dathn gbra mah shyth gthay wkl qleya wkl qshthya wkl ydwhy el ebryn ebdwhy wkl
All his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

ואמר מלכא לאתי גיתאה למא תיזיל אף את עמנא תוב ותיב עם מלכא ארי נוכרא את ואף אם גלי את אזיל לך לאתרך:
lathrk lk azyl ath gly am wap ath nwkra ary mlka em wthyb thwb emna ath ap thyzyl lma gythah lathy mlka wamr
Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Return, and stay with the king; for you are a foreigner and also an exile. Return to your own place.

תמלי אתיתא ויומא דין אטלטלינך עמנא למיזל ואנא אזיל לאתר דלית אנא ידע לאן אנא אזיל תוב ואתיב ית אחך עמך ועביד עמהון טיבו וקשוט:
wqshwT Tybw emhwn webyd emk akhk yth wathyb thwb azyl ana lan yde ana dlyth lathr azyl wana lmyzl emna aTlTlynk dyn wywma athytha thmly
Whereas you came but yesterday, should I today make you go up and down with us, since I go where I may? Return, and take back your brothers. Mercy and truth be with you.”

ואתיב אתי ית מלכא ואמר קיים הוא יי וקיים ריבוני מלכא אלהין באתרא דיהי תמן רבוני מלכא אם למותא ואם לחיי ארי תמן יהי עבדך:
ebdk yhy thmn ary lkhyy wam lmwtha am mlka rbwny thmn dyhy bathra alhyn mlka rybwny wqyym yy hwa qyym wamr mlka yth athy wathyb
Ittai answered the king and said, “As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king is, whether for death or for life, your servant will be there also.”

ואמר דוד לאתי אזיל ועבר ועבר אתי גתאה וכל גברוהי וכל טפלא דעימיה:
deymyh Tpla wkl gbrwhy wkl gthah athy webr webr azyl lathy dwd wamr
David said to Ittai, “Go and pass over.” Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones who were with him.

וכל דיירי ארעא בכן קל רב וכל עמא עברין ומלכא עבר בנחלא דקדרון וכל עמא עברין על אפי אורח מדברא:
mdbra awrkh apy el ebryn ema wkl dqdrwn bnkhla ebr wmlka ebryn ema wkl rb ql bkn area dyyry wkl
All the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over. The king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over toward the way of the wilderness.

והא אף צדוק וכל לואי עמיה נטלין ית ארון קימא דיי ואקימו ית ארונא דיי וסליק אביתר עד דשלים כל עמא למעבר מן קרתא:
qrtha mn lmebr ema kl dshlym ed abythr wslyq dyy arwna yth waqymw dyy qyma arwn yth nTlyn emyh lway wkl tsdwq ap wha
Behold, Zadok also came, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down God’s ark; and Abiathar went up until all the people finished passing out of the city.

ואמר מלכא לצדוק אתיב ית ארונא דיי לקרתא אם אשכח רחמין קדם יי ויתיבינני ויחזינני קדמוהי ואפלח קדמוהי בבית מקדשיה:
mqdshyh bbyth qdmwhy waplkh qdmwhy wykhzynny wythybynny yy qdm rkhmyn ashkkh am lqrtha dyy arwna yth athyb ltsdwq mlka wamr
The king said to Zadok, “Carry God’s ark back into the city. If I find favor in Yahweh’s eyes, he will bring me again, and show me both it and his habitation;

ואם כדין יימר לא רעוא קדמי בך הא אנא יעביד לי כמא דרעוא קדמוהי:
qdmwhy drewa kma ly yebyd ana ha bk qdmy rewa la yymr kdyn wam
but if he says, ‘I have no delight in you,’ behold, here I am. Let him do to me as seems good to him.”
27
ואמר מלכא לצדוק כהנא חזויא את תוב לקרתא בשלם ואחימעץ ברך ויהונתן בר אביתר תרין בניכון עמכון:
emkwn bnykwn thryn abythr br wyhwnthn brk wakhymets bshlm lqrtha thwb ath khzwya khna ltsdwq mlka wamr
The king said also to Zadok the priest, “Aren’t you a seer? Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.

חזו דאנא מתעכב במישרי מדברא עד דימטי פתגמא מנכון לחואה לי:
ly lkhwah mnkwn pthgma dymTy ed mdbra bmyshry mthekb dana khzw
Behold, I will stay at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
29
ואתיב צדוק ואביתר ית ארונא דיי לירושלם ויתיבו תמן:
thmn wythybw lyrwshlm dyy arwna yth wabythr tsdwq wathyb
Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried God’s ark to Jerusalem again; and they stayed there.
30
ודוד סליק במסקנא דטור זיתיא סליק ובכי ורישיה ליה מכרך והוא אזיל יחיף וכל עמא דעמיה כריכו גבר רישיה וסלקין מסק ובכן:
wbkn msq wslqyn ryshyh gbr krykw demyh ema wkl ykhyp azyl whwa mkrk lyh wryshyh wbky slyq zythya dTwr bmsqna slyq wdwd
David went up by the ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered and went barefoot. All the people who were with him each covered his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
31
ודוד אתחוא למימר אחיתופל במרודיא עם אבשלום ואמר דוד קלקל כען ית מלכא דאחיתופל יי:
yy dakhythwpl mlka yth ken qlql dwd wamr abshlwm em bmrwdya akhythwpl lmymr athkhwa wdwd
Someone told David, saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” David said, “Yahweh, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”

והוה דוד אתא עד ריש טוריא די סגיד תמן קדם יי והא לקדמותיה חושי ארכאה מבזעין לבושוהי ועפרא רמי ברישיה:
bryshyh rmy wepra lbwshwhy mbzeyn arkah khwshy lqdmwthyh wha yy qdm thmn sgyd dy Twrya rysh ed atha dwd whwh
When David had come to the top, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his tunic torn and earth on his head.
33
ואמר ליה דוד אם עברתא עמי ותהי עלי למטול:
lmTwl ely wthhy emy ebrtha am dwd lyh wamr
David said to him, “If you pass on with me, then you will be a burden to me;
34
ואם לקרתא תתוב ותימר לאבשלום עבדך אנא מלכא אהי עבדא דאבוך ואנא מבכן וכען ואנא עבדך ותקלקל לי ית מלכא דאחיתופל:
dakhythwpl mlka yth ly wthqlql ebdk wana wken mbkn wana dabwk ebda ahy mlka ana ebdk labshlwm wthymr ththwb lqrtha wam
but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king. As I have been your father’s servant in time past, so I will now be your servant; then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.’
35
והלא עמך תמן צדוק ואביתר כהניא ויהי כל פתגמא דתשמע מבית מלכא תחוי לצדוק ולאביתר כהניא:
khnya wlabythr ltsdwq thkhwy mlka mbyth dthshme pthgma kl wyhy khnya wabythr tsdwq thmn emk whla
Don’t you have Zadok and Abiathar the priests there with you? Therefore whatever you hear out of the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
36
הא תמן עמהון תרין בניהון אחימעץ לצדוק ויהונתן לאביתר ותשלחון בידיהון לותי כל מדעם דתשמעון:
dthshmewn mdem kl lwthy bydyhwn wthshlkhwn labythr wyhwnthn ltsdwq akhymets bnyhwn thryn emhwn thmn ha
Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son. Send to me everything that you shall hear by them.”
